Who is NJ Gold Star Construction?
NJ Gold Star Construction is a family-owned and operated exterior contractor based in Totowa, NJ, owned by Edgar Lopez Gonzalez and working in North Jersey since 2001. It is a service-area business: we come to you, inspect the work, and give a written estimate. The company is licensed as a New Jersey home improvement contractor, HIC #13VH13359900, and is fully insured.
We are a small, family-run company, and we like to say plainly what that means. The owner is on the work. The crew is our own, not a rotating set of subcontractors. When you call, the person who answers can tell you what we found, what it costs and what happens next.
We work out of Totowa, in Passaic County. We are a service-area business, which means we do not run a storefront: we travel to your home, inspect the roof, chimney, gutters, siding, masonry or deck in person, and write the estimate there. That is the reason our estimates come with photos and a measured scope instead of a guess from a phone call.

How a job runs, from the first call to the final walk-through
Every job follows the same path: you call or send a request, we inspect in person, we write an itemized estimate, we confirm any permit with your town, our own crew does the work, and we finish with a final walk-through, photos and, where required, the final inspection. We stand behind the finished work with a satisfaction guarantee.
A customer described the start of the process in a Google review: “the whole process was explained in depth before the job was started.” — Bill E., Google review. That is the part we care about most. Most disputes between homeowners and contractors begin with an unwritten assumption, so we write the assumptions down.
Call or send a request
Phone or text (862) 271-1225, or use the estimate form. Active leaks get priority at any hour.
Hands-on inspection
We look at the work in person, measure it and photograph what we find, including what is under the shingles or behind the siding when we can see it.
Written, itemized estimate
Materials, areas, tear-off, flashing, cleanup and anything that could change the price are stated in writing. It is free and carries no obligation.
Permits confirmed
Each town runs its own construction office, so we confirm whether your job needs a permit or notice and who files it.
Our own crew does the work
We do not hand your job to subcontractors. The people who inspected it are the people who build it.
Final walk-through
We walk the job with you, give you photos and the permit record, and request the final inspection where the town requires one.
What we build and repair, and how the trades fit together
We work in six connected trades: roofing, chimney, gutters, masonry, siding and decks. Masonry means masonry steps, poured concrete sidewalks and walks, natural stone walls, stone veneer and foundation repair. The trades overlap on a real house: roof water becomes a gutter question, a gutter problem becomes a siding or foundation problem, and a chimney sits in the middle of the roof.
It is easier to hire one company that understands how the trades meet than to coordinate four that do not. That is the reasoning behind the range of work we do.
- Roofing: roof repair, roof replacement, attic ventilation and roof maintenance.
- Chimney: chimney repair, chimney rebuilds, chimney liner installation, chimney caps, chase covers and deep chimney cleaning.
- Gutters: seamless installation, repair, guards, screens and cleaning.
- Masonry: masonry steps, poured concrete sidewalks, walkways, concrete and stone patios, natural stone walls and foundation repair.
- Siding: installation and repair.
- Decks: new decks and structural repair.
The project gallery shows real jobs from our own crew, and our reviews page quotes what customers wrote about them.
Where we work: Passaic and Bergen first, then across northern New Jersey
Our home county is Passaic and our core market is Bergen County. We also work in Essex, Hudson, Union and Morris counties, and we take on Ocean County projects that justify the trip. We work from Totowa, not from a local office in every county, and each county page says plainly how we handle it.
Because we are based in Totowa, the towns closest to the shop are the easiest to reach quickly. We say that without promising response times, because storms do not keep a schedule.
- Passaic County: our home county, including Totowa, Paterson, Clifton, Wayne and Little Falls.
- Bergen County: our core market, with town pages from Fort Lee to Mahwah and Montvale.
- Essex County: Montclair, Nutley and Verona.
- Morris County and Ocean County: projects we take on from Totowa; the Ocean County page explains what to expect.

Licensing, insurance and how to check us
NJ Gold Star Construction holds New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor registration #13VH13359900 and is fully insured. You can verify the registration yourself on the state Division of Consumer Affairs license verification system. We handle permits where a town requires them, follow the EPA lead-safe rule on pre-1978 homes, and tie final payment to a passed final inspection.
Do not take any contractor’s word for a license. Check it. The Division of Consumer Affairs runs a public license verification system that lists home improvement contractors, and our registration number is NJ HIC #13VH13359900.
What licensing and insurance mean in practice
- Registration: a New Jersey home improvement contractor must be registered with the state.
- Insurance: we carry full insurance, and we will show you proof on request.
- Permits: each town enforces the State Uniform Construction Code through its own office, and we confirm what your job needs.
- Lead-safe work: the EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires contractors paid to disturb paint in homes built before 1978 to be lead-safe certified and to use lead-safe practices. We ask the age of the house at every estimate.
- Payment: on permitted work, we tie the last payment to a passed final inspection.
The Chimney Safety Institute of America cites NFPA 211, which calls for chimneys, fireplaces and vents to be inspected at least once a year, which is why every chimney visit starts with an inspection.
